Steelhead run in Northern USA
The weather has finally got cold enough with some snow & rain for the annual Erie Steelhead run to commence. I went up to Lake Erie & fished 2 small creeks feeding it on the East side call Twelve mile & Eight mile creeks on 24 November. The Steelhead were commencing their annual migration and we had a ball. I went up their with a friend from work - Tim Traynor, who recently took a trip to Montana & Wyoming and was in touch with David Carnos. We arrived at 5:30 before dawn and walk upstream away from the crowded mouth areas that run into the lake. There were lots of fish in the creeks and we were caught a great many. I cannot remember how many, but my rod arm and knuckles on my reel hand were very sore, when we finished after lunch time. These fish were very fresh and very active in the river, as you will see from their colors. We let them all go bar one each for the dinner table. We were using a 2 hook rig with fluorocarbon of 8.5lb on the top fly and 5 lb on the bottom fly. I lost about a 1/4 of my fly box with break off's on 8.5lb material. The water temperature was only 2oC and I think this made the leader material very brittle. I am going for a softer monofilament next time I go up there. With a bit of luck that will be next week. I have enclosed a few picture which we took when we stopped for a break. Tight lines - Trevor Adams
